Using Easy Search

Use Easy Search to locate a specific company's directory record. If you need to set a charge code, set it before you begin your search.

Here's how to use Easy Search, step by step:

Step 1. Type a company name or ticker symbol

Tell InSite what company you want to find by typing all or part of the company name or enter the company's ticker symbol. Examples:

Company Name Ticker Symbol
Microsoft MSFT
3M MMM
Procter and Gamble PG
Chevron CHV

Some points to keep in mind:

  • When entering a company name, the product automatically searches all variant names for a company. Variant names are alternate names the company may be known as. For example, if you enter "Big Blue" for IBM, you well get a match based on the variant name of Big Blue for IBM. You will see the variant name highlighted in the variant name section of the company directory record.
  • Capitalization doesn't matter.
  • Whatever you enter is automatically wildcarded so if you don't know the full company name, just enter what you know and you will get all the matches for what you've entered. Remember if you enter Intel, you will retrieve Intel Corp., the chip manufacturer, as well as Company names starting with the root intel (e.g. Intelligent Electronics Inc.).
  • You can enter as many company names or ticker symbols as you like. Just be sure to put an OR between them. If you put an AND between them, you will not get any results.

If you want to erase your entry and start again, click the Clear button.

Step 2. Choose a search option

After typing a company name or ticker symbol, tell InSite how to search. You have two choices.

  • Select the radio button next to company name if you have entered a company name in the box. You will get a list of companies that matches what you entered.
  • Select the radio button next to ticker symbol if you have entered a ticker symbol. You will get a matching company record.

Step 3. Click the Search button...

...and your results appear. Now you are ready to review the results.

Using Advanced Search

Use Advanced Search to find companies that match certain criteria defined by you. For example, find all the companies in California with revenues over $100 million. With Advanced Search you can query by four main categories:

  • Size - includes revenues or assets and number of employees
  • Location - includes country, state, metropolitan area, U.S. city, area code, and zip code
  • Industry - includes primary or secondary SIC code, and business description
  • General Information - includes company name, ticker symbol, parent company, ultimate parent, officer name, officer position, business type, stock exchange, and year founded

Remember, if you need to set a charge code, set it before you begin your search. Near the top of Advanced Search form is the name of the product you are searching (Company InSite), the date the product was last updated, and the Charge Code for the search if one has been set.

Here's how to use Advanced Search, step by step:

Step 1: Complete the search fields

Enter information in one or more of the available fields.

Searching by Size

  • To query by Revenue, select the radio button next to Revenue, select "Greater than", "Less than" or "Between" from the option list, and enter a revenue figure. Tip: enter whole numbers. The revenue or asset amount is in millions. For example, entering 10 and clicking the greater than option, will find companies with revenues over $10 million.
  • To query by Assets, select the radio button next to Assets, select "Greater than", "Less than", or "Between" from the option list, and enter an asset figure.
  • To query by Either revenue or assets, select the radio button next to Either, select "Greater than", "Less than" or "Between" from the option list, and enter a revenue/asset figure.
  • To query by Number of Employees, select "Greater than", "Less than", or "Between" from the option list, and enter number of employees.

Searching by Location

  • To query by Country, select one or more country names from the drop down list.
  • To query by State, select one or more states from the drop down list.
  • To query by Metropolitan Area, select one or more areas from the drop down list.
  • To query by U.S. City, enter one or more city names. Note: international cities are not searchable.
  • To query by Area Code, enter one or more three-digit area codes, each separated by "or". Example: 415 or 408. Up to 30 area codes can be entered.
  • To query by Zip Code, enter one or more five or nine-digit zip codes, each separated by "or". Example: 94404 or 94066. Alternatively, enter a partial zip code followed by the asterisk (*) wildcard character. Example: 94*. Up to 30 zip codes can be entered.

Searching by Industry

  • To query by Primary SIC Code, enter one or more SIC codes, each separated by "or". Example: 2834 or 2836. Alternatively, enter a partial SIC code followed by the asterisk (*) wildcard character. Example: 28*. Up to 30 SIC codes can be entered.
  • To query by Primary or Secondary SIC Code to find companies whose primary or secondary business activity is the industry of interest to you, enter one or more SIC codes, each separated by "or". Example: 2834 or 2836. Alternatively, enter a partial SIC code followed by the asterisk (*) wildcard character. Example: 28*. Up to 30 SIC codes can be entered.
  • To search by Business Description entered a word or phrase that captures the business of interest. For example, enter Public Relations or Advertising to find all companies involved in these two business practices.

Searching by General Information

  • To query by Company, enter one or more company names, each separated by "or".
  • To query by Ticker Symbol, enter one or more ticker symbols, each separated by "or".
  • To query by Parent Company, enter the parent company name of interest. This is useful in finding all direct subsidiaries. Tip: enter the full company name. Example: enter International Business Machines Corp. to find all direct subsidiaries of IBM.
  • To query by Ultimate Parent, enter the ultimate parent company name of interest. This is useful in finding all subsidiaries. Tip: enter the full company name. Example: enter International Business Machines Corp. to find all subsidiaries of IBM.
  • To query by Officer Name, enter the first name then last name. Example: Keith Lassner. Tip: Many officer names include a middle initial. To successfully search those with a middle initial do not put a period after the initial. Example: William H Gates. If you don't get any results, try entering just the last name.
  • To query by Officer Position, select one or more officer positions from the drop down list.
  • To query by Business Type, check the boxes that apply to your search query. The business types selected, will be joined with the boolean operator OR. For example, if you check off private company and public company, you will retrieve all private or public companies in the product.
  • To query by Stock Exchange, select one or more exchanges from the drop down list.
  • To query by Year Founded, select "after", "before" or "between" from the option list, and enter the year.

Some points to keep in mind:

  • The relationship between fields is AND. Entering terms in two or more fields requires that each field have its respective term or value in order to yield results.
  • Within a field, search terms can be joined with the connectors AND, OR, and NOT.
  • Capitalization does not matter.
  • Small words like "of", "a", and "this" are ignored.
  • To select more than one item from a drop-down list when using a PC, hold your control key down and click the items of interest. To de-select an item, hold your control key down and click the item to be de-selected. On a Mac, use the command button. If multiple items are selected, the relationship between them is OR. For example, in the State field, you can select multiple states and you will retrieve all companies in any of the states selected.

If you would like to erase the entire form, simply click the Clear button.

Step 2. Submit the search

After making entries in one or more fields, click the Search button to display a list of companies matching your search criteria.

Note: To return to the Advanced Search page with your previous search still visible, click your browser's Back button. If you click the Advanced Search button, a blank search page will display.
